Direct Prayer Action

Go to the action diary or the new headlines to find out about the next direct prayer action event. SPEAK is seeking to encourage direct action prayer in strategic places in close proximity to decision-makers. The idea is for large groups to gather in strategic places to bring attention to the issue at the same time as praying. This is central to the vision of SPEAK- to find creative ways of challenging injustice and asking for change.

There are many stories about how prayer has impacted in amazing ways on situations of injustice, war or upheaval. Rees Howells shut down his college towards the end of the Second World War and the whole college dedicated all their time to praying for peace! God gave them amazing insights and specific words into the situation.

Urgent Prayer Network

There is an ‘Urgent Direct Action Prayer Network’ for people willing to be contacted by telephone in a situation of emergency, and committed to turning up in strategic places at short notice. The prayer meetings could be held anywhere from outside government offices, outside the headquarters of multi-national companies to outside arms fairs. The idea is that we use a tree network diagram and each person phones the next two people on the list. For example if the Foreign Office give an export licence to UK weapons being sent to an oppressive regime and we decide that it would be good to hold an emergency prayer meeting outside the Foreign Office, then we can gather a lot of people quickly. This can have a powerful effect on urgent situations. Any DJs or percussion instrument players wanting to be on the Urgent Direct Action Prayer Network are most welcome so that we can also have some creative worship with the prayer.

Examples of Strategic Prayer Meetings

On Millenium Eve we held a prayer meeting for poor country debt cancellation (in support of Jubilee 2000) outside the Millennium Dome. The Government Minister Steven Timms MP who, at that time worked in the treasury alongside Gordon Brown MP towards debt cancellation came out of the Dome to join us. He gave us a speech of support, and encouraged us to continue to use our voice against situations of injustice because he knows that it is making a difference inside the government. We made a huge world structure and painted countries we were praying for on it. We put a flashing emergency light inside it to represent the urgency of the issue.

SPEAK maintains a strict policy of non-violence. Petitioning God and people at the same time releases a powerful dynamic that shows people something of what God is like.
