Take action
We too can be blind to the impact of our action or inaction. As citizens of the UK, we are also citizens of Europe and can therefore use our voices to influence the behaviour of companies based here. The UK’s international trade policy is tied up with the EU – putting an emphasis on more freedom for multinational companies to invest overseas. It is crucial that these companies are regulated to protect people and the environment.
In March 2007, the European Parliament passed a positive resolution called ‘Corporate Responsibility: A New Partnership’. It echoes SPEAK’s Big Dress campaign goals calls for companies to be made Accountable, Careful and Transparent.
However, only Commissioners can initiate new EU legislation. As yet, the relevant commissioners have not acted on the parliament’s recommendations, delaying a real step forward for people waiting to be treated fairly.
