London Network
LONDON!
The capital where all the big decisions get made (apart from Brussels, Washington, Geneva etc!). It is crucial for SPEAK to have a presence here and to be involved in many aspects of London life. So far in the London Network we have several different things going on. To get involved in any London Network stuff contact Jo at the Network Support Team.
Discussion Group
We have a regular discussion group, looking at topical and current
issues. Basically we reckon if we're going to pray and campaign for
change to injustice, we need to understand how the world works and how
it can be changed. Also we like getting together for a drink, to put
the world to rights! We meet about every three weeks, but you need to
get on our distribution list to find out the details. It's very
informal, you can come and go as you like and there's no pressure to
contribute if you just want to listen.
If you have time and want to find out a bit about the topic before the
evening we send round interesting articles, websites etc. The topic
itself is usually chosen at the end of the previous discussion. So far
we have talked about pacifism and just war; logo's and brands and
alternatives to capitalism. Although we may look at some topics from a
Christian viewpoint, we hope the evenings will be interesting to
Christians and non-Christians alike.
Fairtrade Café Shop Venue
We have started a fairtrade project in north London, which is growing
excitingly. Before Christmas we had a stall on Saturdays in St Mary's
Church, Upper Street in Islington. This went very well and has since
expanded to a more permanent shop, cafe and venue, called The Crypt
Cafe. The concept is explained in more detail in the community section
of the site.
Dance upon Injustice
Is a dance night held in London, with our own DJ's and a social justice
theme. Previous events have had more than 400 people and have been an
amazing time for reaching people untouched by Church or concepts of
God's justice. The next event is on Saturday November 1 at South Side
Bar, Cleveland Street, W1 from 8.
Arts Team
Whilst not a specific London thing, the arts team often meet in London
and put on events here. Recent events include the float and big dress
at the trade justice parade, an art exhibition ‘fairly human' and
fairtrade goody bags sent to MPs.
Also in the pipeline are a London prayer group, a newsletter and a
parliamentary lobby group, just waiting for people to take them on. If
this is you or you would like to know more, please get in touch.
Synergy Project
The London Network have been leading Network involvement in the Synergy Project, a conscious club night in London, see Synergy Project.
