Community and Discipleship

SPEAK Groups and Cells

Some people feel that they want to set up a SPEAK cell which provides the building blocks for discipleship and community, while also acting as a campaign and prayer group. This is a good model for those wanting to be careful about the number of Christian meetings they go to. Cells also benefit those wanting to be part of a discipleship group with others with a similar calling and focus. It can provide a setting from which new Christians can be discipled in a familiar environment. Some SPEAK groups may find that they develop naturally into cells. SPEAK is also working with other cell networks to ensure additional discipleship resources are provided for all SPEAK cells.

Discipleship in SPEAK groups

If people come to know and experience God through your SPEAK group it is important to find ways that they can be encouraged in their faith and to find ways to deepen their relationship with God. The local context of each SPEAK group will be different and the ways that people get discipled will inevitably differ. However, we want to encourage each group which sets up to make sure that they are groups which these people could link in with and receive encouragement from whether it is through a Christian Union, church or cell group. It is important that these groups also have an understanding of justice issues and what your SPEAK group is trying to do so that they can support you as a group and pray for you.

Campaign groups, even in secular culture have lots of parallels to what church is intended to be about, providing a sense of community and shared goals and meeting together to work together and encourage each other!!! Bringing Jesus into this context would be dynamite!! If you are already part of a cell which is very justice focused and you want to link in more to the SPEAK Network then this is also possible. You don't have to call yourself a SPEAK Group to link into the Network.

If you want to pursue this particular model we can give you advice and support. Contact the SPEAK Network Support Team and we'd be happy to discuss the issues with you.
