World Debt & Prayer
Much has been achieved since the start of the Jubilee 2000 campaign. Countries have seen $150 billion of debt written off, but there is a still lot to be done, and lots to be prayed for. The founders of the Jubilee 2000 campaign hoped that $350 billion of debt would be written off, so in that respect the campaign is not even half way there!
For a detailed history and resume of the current situation together with action points please see the World Debt section.
In SPEAK we believe that the only way to see situations of injustice changed is through prayer and the power of Jesus Christ. To see further debt relief for countries who are unable to meet their debt repayments, or who can only meet their debt repayments at the expense of public services such as education and health we need to be praying regularly and with commitment.
So, here are some prayer points: Please pray through them, and use some of the other resources on the website to make your prayer times as dynamic and effective and enjoyable as you can!
- Pray for God's kingdom of peace and justice to be extended. Pray the Biblical principles of Jubilee would govern world economic relations.
- Pray that the G8 leaders would use their influence on the World Bank and IMF to convince them to cancel the remaining debt owed to them by the poorest countries.
- Pray for President George W Bush, that he would listen to the USA groups campaigning for debt cancellation. Pray he would understand this urgent need and make it a high priority under his administration.
- Pray for the heads of the World Bank (James Wofensohn) and the IMF (Horst Kãhler). Pray that they would grant deeper debt cancellation, following the lead of the G8 countries.
- Pray that the global Church will arise and fulfil its mission in sharing the gospel of truth and justice. Pray it would be strengthened to speak out on this issue. Pray God will show us how to combine the need of sharing the gospel with speaking out on justice issues.
Thank you and happy praying!
