Electronics companies address issues in the mining industry
In April we worked with a European Coalition, 'Make IT Fair' on a Pray & Post. We looked at the horrendous conditions faced by artisanal miners in the Democratic Republic of Congo, mining tin which ends up in mobile phones, computers and MP3 players. The good news is that some major electronics companies have started to respond to the situation. Check out http://somo.nl/news-en/electronics-companies-address-issues-in-the-minin... to read more about it.
While we welcome efforts from more enlightened companies, the lack of repsonse from others demonstrates the need for companies to be accountable for their social and environmental impacts by law, not just when they choose to be.
If you haven't sent a card to Commissioner Verheugen yet, you can learn more about the campaign and print off the card here. Also we'll be doing some more creative campaigning at the summer festivals on this issue, so come and see us for a chat and a blue peter craft session at Soul Survivor, Momentum or Greenbelt!
