For any action you take towards a campaign, you can double its impact by getting coverage in local media.

Attached is a template press release for the Day of Action 2010 - if you were there, you can send this off to local papers (or think outside the box - parish magazines reach a surprising number of people). When you take cool actions for the campaign back home as well, you should still be able to use the general ideas here to create your own press release!

Here are some general tips on doing a press release for local media:

  • Think first about if it is news worthy – you having an opinion on an issue is not news, but you holding an event to raise awareness of an issue is!
  • Make sure it has a good headline/hook, and that the first paragraph is effective, as it is the most important
  • Make it locally focussed as much as possible
  • Make it personal - Ask yourself, “How are people going to relate to this and will they be able to connect?”
  • Leave good contact details
