Report from the Day of Action 2012

On Monday 27th February, after an inspiring weekend at Soundcheck, SPEAK Network members gathered for our 2012 Day of Action. This year’s Day of Action was part of SPEAK’s ongoing Unfinished Business Corporate Accountability Campaign. As the SPEAK Network we wanted to take a public stand and speak out against cooperate misbehaviour of UK companies, and the consequences it has on people around the world.

Praying for the Riots

Riots spread across the country in August causing untold suffering to families, businesses and communities. We need to stand together as a Network in solidarity and in prayer and action with those suffering. We also need to pray against the injustice of poverty, social exlusion and the resulting criminality which underlies these events. Photo by AP.

Blog: Would Corporations Move Abroad if Restrictions were Tightened?

Many banks and businesses claim that they would leave the UK if regulations were tightened, therefore taking tax revenues and future investment with them. For example, Diageo’s CEO claims “our location here in London should not be taken for granted” and Unilever boss warns that it would be “unfortunate for the UK” if additional regulations and taxes were to hamper his business. But are these threats substantive?

Blog: Carrying an Umbrella

There’s a church not far from my parents’ house that has a huge billboard outside. Every few months they change the message, and over the years I have cringed time and time again at some of the excruciatingly cheesy or embarrassing slogans that they’ve come up with. But yesterday I went past the church again for the first time in ages, and the current message reads: “Prayer is asking for rain, faith is carrying an umbrella” I’ve kept thinking about it ever since.

Campaigns update: Unfinished Business in China

This week Greenpeace released it's latest report 'Dirty Laundry' investgating the toxic water pollution produced by textile factories in China. The report accuses Nike, Adidas, Puma, H&M and Lacoste of allowing the discharge of dangerous chemicals into Chinese water systems.

In Memory of Brian Haw

Brian Haw, the anti-war peace activist who has been protesting on Parliament Square for over a decade, has died after a battle with cancer. Brian supported SPEAK’s arms trade campaign, and as a Christian joined in a communion liturgy with us on Parliament Square during our Day of Action in 2003. His commitment and outspoken-ness will continue to inspire.

Blog: Campaigning is a Dangerous Business

Anyone who has ever been on a SPEAK day of action will be familiar with the excitement of it all – The crowd raising their voices against injustice, an imaginative and colourful demonstration, and a procession to that most prominent site of UK politics, the Houses of Parliament, where a group of young and conscientious activists will lobby their MPs on issues of global poverty. Suddenly, the letters, petitions, and Pray & Post Cards have an even greater meaning. After the security checks on the way in, and passing by the pomp of this great architectural space, comes the end result: meeting with a group of wealthy, mainly white, mainly male decision makers in an attempt to appeal to their conscience.

Blog: Speak out for Libya

Tagged:

After decades of indifference, it seems strange that the West should now so suddenly develop a conscience concerning the welfare of Libyan civilians. Libyans have long suffered the tyranny of Gadaffi’s dictatorship, well-armed as it is by companies based in the ‘developed’ world. So why is it only now that those arms sales licenses have been cancelled?

Students Take Action Against the Arms Trade

Tagged:

This past month students have been making a stand against universities which profit from and invest in the arms trade. Despite the unethical and harmful nature of such links with the arms trade, universities continue to take funding and turn a blind eye to the suffering caused by their actions.

Soundcheck 2011: Resurrecting Hope

Soundcheck 2011 at Rag Factory view of main room

Soundcheck 2011: Resurrecting Hope. What a weekend. We came expecting to be challenged, to discover more about unjust situations in the world around us, to be inspired by the stories of others in the SPEAK Network. Most of all we came to claim back a real sense of hope, in a world where pessimism can so often be the response when confronted with the challenges of poverty and oppression.
